Arjuna's Dilemma

Chapter 1 of the Bhagavad Gita: Arjunavishadyoga with the most important shlokas detailed

What is Shloka 1?

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच |
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः |
मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय ||1||

What does it mean?

Dhritarashtra said: O Sanjaya, after my sons and the sons of Pandu assembled in the place of pilgrimage at Kurukshetra, desiring to fight, what did they do?

Significance

The use of the word धर्मक्षेत्रे (Dharmakṣetre - Field of Dharma) suggests that this is more than a land dispute; it is a battle between righteousness and unrighteousness. It also reveals the King's bias as he distinguishes between "my sons" and "the sons of Pandu."

The Seed of The Conflict

What is Shloka 1.21-1.22?

अर्जुन उवाच:

सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये रथं स्थापय मेऽच्युत | यावदेतान्निरीक्षेऽहं योद्धुकामानवस्थितान् || १-२१ ||

What does it mean?

Arjuna said: O Infallible One (Acyuta), please station my chariot between the two armies so that I may see those who stand here desiring to fight, with whom I must contend in this great battle.

Significance

Arjuna refers to Krishna as Acyuta (one who never fails). This is the last moment of Arjuna’s confidence. By standing in the "middle," he loses his objective warrior stance and begins to see the opponents as family members rather than enemies.
